Military Advocates SA, located at the Repat Health precinct* in the Veterans Wellbeing Centre, serves as a vital resource for veterans and their families.

We are a not for profit organisation which includes a community of practicing advocates helping South Australian veterans and their families in times of injury, illness or crisis.

Our services are free of charge and include assistance with Department of Veteran Affairs claims, advocacy at the Veterans Review Board, counselling, support during a crisis or the death of a loved one, and financial assistance .

Here’s how we can assist:

We have experienced Compensation Advocates and Wellbeing Advocates who are endorsed by their ex-service organisation. They are accredited under the Advocacy Training and Development Program (ATDP) and have a formal qualification in accordance with the Australian Qualifications Framework.

  • Hours of Operation: Monday to Friday, from 9:30 AM to 4:00 PM.

We have outreach services located in the South East/Limestone Coast and on the Fleurieu.

James William Hignett

Bill Hignett, was a Vietnam War Veteran and veterans advocate, who made significant contributions to the welfare of veterans in South Australia.

Founder of the Plympton Veterans’ Centre:

Bill Hignett was the visionary behind the Plympton Veterans’ Centre in Adelaide. His commitment and dedication led to the establishment of new veterans’ hubs at the RSLs in Mount Gambier, Millicent, Robe and Coonawarra/Penola.

The Plympton Veterans Centre, now Military Advocates SA has become a vital resource for veterans and their families.

Military Service:

Born in Millicent on March 3, 1949, Bill Hignett served his country during the Vietnam War. He was part of the 86 Transport Platoon of the Royal Australian Army Service Corps. The 86 Transport was based at Vung Tau in the Phuoc Tuy Province, and provided essential transport services.

After 469 days of service, he returned to South Australia and embarked on a successful career as a teacher and an official with the Australian Education Union.

Advocacy and Recognition:

Bill Hignett’s advocacy extended beyond military service. His efforts contributed to Reconciliation SA and the establishment of the Kaurna Plains School in Adelaide.

His commitment earned him the Order of Australia Medal (OAM), he was named ANZAC of the Year 2023 , and is a Life Member AEUSA.

Legacy:

Bill Hignett’s name is etched on the honour board in the foyer of the Millicent War Memorial Civic and Arts Centre.

His legacy lives on through Military Advocates SA and the support it provides to veterans and their families. Bill Hignett’s selfless service and dedication continue to impact the lives of veterans, ensuring they receive the care and support they deserve.
