Supporting South Australian Veterans and Their Families

Military Advocates SA is a dedicated not-for-profit organisation committed to assisting veterans and their families across South Australia during times of injury, illness, and crisis.

Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) is a concern for military and veteran families. 45.5% of partners report exposure to IPV, which includes 43.6% emotional abuse, 9.1 % physical abuse and 1.4% sexual abuse.

Our experienced Wellbeing Advocates can help veterans, partners, and families to seek the help and support that they need.

Research shows that:

  • 40% had sought assistance for mental health.
  • Were 4 times more likely to have PTSD
  • Were 3 times more likely to have suicide ideation

Our Services

Our network of Wellbeing Advocates spans South Australia, offering comprehensive support in various areas:

  • Claims Assistance: We guide family members through the Department of Veteran Affairs claims process.
  • Advocacy: We represent veterans at the Veterans Review Board.
  • Counselling Support: Emotional support during crises or bereavement.
  • Financial Assistance: Help with managing financial challenges.
  • Support for Aging Family Members: Assisting families in caring for elderly veterans.

We take pride in our independence, and all our services are completely free of charge.

Meet Our Wellbeing Advocates

Our dedicated Wellbeing Advocates are here to provide essential support to veterans, spouses, widows/widowers, and family members. They can assist with:

  • Referral to Counselling services to
    • support women who are experiencing violence or control.
    • support children and young people who have suffered trauma or witnessed IPV.
    • support men who want to do something about their use of anger or violence.
    • provide joint counselling where safe.
    • support families as to what to do when a relationship ends and managing co-parenting.
    • support veterans overcome PTSD.
  • Housing and Accommodation: referral to services that provide emergency accommodation.
  • Legal: referral to legal services with experience supporting veterans and family
  • Payments and Support: help accessing payments and supporting IPV situations.
